    BARCLAYS ASIA TROPHY

Introduction of 2009 Barclays Asia Trophy Tournament: The Barclays Asia Trophy, also known as the Premier League Asia Trophy, is a Premier League-organised four team football tournament  that has been held every two years in Asia since 2003.

Originally known as the Premier League Asia Cup, the Asia Trophy is held once every two years in odd years, to avoid conflicts with the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Football Championship tournaments.

It’s the only Premier-League affiliated tournament to be held outside England, and is an opportunity for the many fans of the Premier League in Asia to experience as close as they are going to get to a real competitive Premier League match outside of England. Furthermore, it’s a chance for professional football in Asia to learn from the Premier League, arguably the best league in the world, how to put on tournaments, train referees and use football to socially engage local communities

While Premier League teams have travelled to Africa and North America in recent years, Asia still remains the prime destination with a market measured in hundreds of millions (if not billions), whose passion, knowledge and understanding of the world game is increasing all the time.

    Barclays Asia Trophy2009

This year the tournament is coming to Beijing and will see Hull City, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Beijing Guoan compete for the Barclays Asia Trophy.

The Premier League is working with the Beijing Football Association and the Beijing Municipal Authority to organise the Barclays Asia Trophy, which is one of the headline events at the inaugural 2009 Beijing Football International Festival.

Barclays is the title sponsor of the Asia Trophy for the second time and other Commercial partners include Nike, Budweiser and EA Sport. Beijing Television will be the host broadcaster.

The four team knock-out tournament will take place over two match days on 29 and 31 July with a final to determine the winner and a play-off to decide third place. All matches will take place in the Workers Stadium and 49,000 tickets will be on sale for each match day. The tournament will be officiated by Barclays Premier League Match Officials and BFA Match Officials, and will also be staged in accordance with Barclays Premier League Rules. Additionally, all matches will be broadcast locally in China, in the UK by Sky Sports and around the world. Pricing and advice on purchasing tickets will be announced shortly.

The schedule for the tournament (with final kick-off times TBC) is:

    • Wednesday 29 July
    o West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur Kick-off 6pm (11am BST)
    o Hull City v Beijing Guoan   Kick-off 8.30pm (1.30pm BST)

    • Friday 31 July
    o 3rd and 4th play-off    Kick-off 6pm (11am BST)
    o Final      Kick-off 8.30pm (1.30pm BST)

The Premier League has also committed to a full programme of ‘Creating Chances’ activities, including coaching initiatives, refereeing schemes and community schemes to run alongside the Barclays Asia Trophy 2009. The Premier League will run one of its innovative Premier Skills coaching courses as well as a Barclays Asia Trophy Creating Chances Community Programme for 10-13 year-old children. The Premier League is working in close partnership with the BFA on both initiatives.

Premier Skills is an international coaching development project run by the Premier League and the British Council. Designed to leave lasting legacy, it provides week-long courses to coach the coaches at grassroots level in the morning and afternoon workshops on coaching best practice and community sport development. At the end of the course the coaches return to use their new skills in their local communities. Two coaches from each of the three participating Premier League Clubs will help run the course in Beijing from Friday 24 to Thursday 30 July. Former Premier League player Warren Barton will run Premier Skills in Beijing.

Barclays Asia Trophy Creating Chances Community Programme will run from Saturday 25 to Wednesday 29 July. A group of 96 local children – a mix of boys, girls and those from disabled groups - will receive three hours of coaching each day. Using the Creating Chances model that the Premier League run in England, the children will not only be taught football skills but will also learn about healthy lifestyles and personal development.

The two courses will culminate on the Thursday when there will be a Barclays Asia Trophy Creating Chances Community Festival. The Premier Skills coaches will host a special skills session with the children from the Community Programme. Joining them will be players and coaching staff from the participating Premier League Clubs. This event will be open to the media.

Barclays Asia Trophy -  Past Tournaments

    Malaysia 2003

The inaugural Barclays Asia Trophy was played in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, featuring Chelsea, Newcastle United, Birmingham City and the Malaysian national team. The matches were played in the 80.000 seater Bukit Jalil Stadium, with Chelsea beating Newcastle United to secure their first silverware under Roman Ambramovich’s ownership. The tournament was a sporting and marketing success and led to Barclays Asia Trophy becoming a regular fixture in the Premier League’s calendar.

    Thailand 2005

Played in Bangkok this Premier League Asia Trophy tournament featured three of the great names in English football history, with Everton, Manchester City and Bolton Wanderers lining up along with the Thai U23 national team. Sam Allardyce’s Bolton won the final against more fancied Manchester City.

This was also the first time a significant community element had been added to the tournament with the managers, accompanied by two players, from each club travelling from Bangkok to tsunami affected Phuket to conduct coaching courses with local school children and see what work was being carried out as a result of the £1 million donated by the Premier League clubs to the tsunami relief effort.

    Hong Kong 2007

The 2007 tournament was perhaps the most competitive and vibrant Asia Trophy so far. Liverpool’s enormous support in Hong Kong, strong emerging interest in both Fulham and Portsmouth combined with a solid local following for South China AA made for matches played in front of a passionate full house at Premier League pace.

In the second final to be decided by penalties a David James inspired Portsmouth beat a much fancied Liverpool team featuring the likes of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard.

The supporter buy-in to the event was unprecedented and the Premier League cemented its commitment to community and football engagement putting on both a coaching clinic and a referees’ technical development programme.
